Dance
Appreciation of Dance continues to blossom at St Peter’s Girls’ School. Our students are encouraged to express themselves without inhibition and take creative risks to experiment with and interpret the many different forms.
From our Early Learners’ Centre through to Year 12, our students are given countless opportunities to experience the joy of dance. Our Receptions and Year 1s learn contemporary dance, culminating in a special concert. Co-curricular dance classes start from Year 1. As students progress, dance takes on new and more challenging dimensions. We stage a Middle and Senior School Dance Choreographic Evening mid-way through the year. Our committed performers also ply their craft across the School’s Arts portfolio, from elegant ballerina displays at our major concerts, to energetic choreography for our Choral Night and School musicals.
The world of dance at St Peter’s Girls saw much excitement in 2017. The School appointed a new Dance Teacher in accomplished performer, educator and Old Scholar Kate Burnett (nee Burnell, Selwyn '99). She holds a Diploma in Classical Ballet from the National Theatre Ballet School and a Bachelor of Education from the University of South Australia. Kate once worked as a dancer for Disney, performing in many shows at Disneyland in Hong Kong and Tokyo. She has taught at several South Australian schools, eventually leading her to St Peter’s Girls where she continues to blend her love of teaching with her passion for dance. Kate is now also Head of The Arts at the School.
A love of dance can accompany our girls into their senior years and beyond. Our curriculum provides a tailored pathway leading to Year 12 study that aims to develop dance technique, performance skills and cultural understandings.

Our students improvise and experiment with sequences, compositions and choreography. They use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to evaluate, explore, select and refine their own performances and they learn to give informed opinions about historical and contemporary dance.
Launched in 2022, our FUSION Performing Arts Collaboration is a fantastic co-curricular opportunity which combines Stage 1 Music Performance and ensemble dance pieces. With no audition process, it is open to students of all abilities across Years 8 to 12 who are lovers of the stage.
FUSION is a biennial offering in Terms 1 and 2 which runs in alternate years to our biennial School Musical. The end product is a mixture of live music and singing with dance in a variety of styles including ballet, jazz, musical theatre, tap and contemporary.
